The distinctly British brand was founded by Thomas Burberry in 1856 and was primarily an outdoor clothing company in its early years. Its famous gabardine fabric was a huge breakthrough as a breathable and waterproof material and is still made in the UK exclusively for the brand’s trench coats. As the inventors of this breakthrough material, Burberry went on to dress many other pioneers including Arctic explorer Ernest Shackleton and George Mallory, who wore it to climb Mount Everest. Towards the end of the 20th century, Burberry began to expand its lines to include a full ready-to-wear and accessories offering. It was the opening of the Bond Street store in 2000 that really marked Burberry’s status as a luxury brand and over the next decade it would grow into the major global fashion house it is today.
