A murder has been committed in London. A snowstorm has cut off a remote Derbyshire guesthouse. Seven strangers find themselves stranded together at Monkswell Manor — and one of them is a killer. When a police sergeant arrives with a chilling warning, the guests discover that the murderer is still in their midst. One by one, their carefully guarded secrets begin to unravel. But which one of them has blood on their hands?

“The most famous whodunnit ever written — and still, after 70 years, the most entertaining evening you’ll spend trying to figure it out.”

Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap opened in the West End on 25 November 1952, at the Ambassadors Theatre in West Street. It transferred next door to St Martin’s Theatre in March 1974 without missing a single performance — and has been running there ever since. Over 29,000 performances. More than 10 million tickets sold. 297 actors and actresses. One rule: don’t tell anyone how it ends.

Based on Christie’s 1947 radio play Three Blind Mice, the stage adaptation was written at the request of Queen Mary for her 80th birthday. It was Christie’s son-in-law Anthony Hicks who suggested the story had the makings of a full-length stage mystery. Christie herself expected the run to last no more than eight months. She was rather wrong.

In 2022, the production received the Laurence Olivier Award for Special Recognition in honour of its 70th anniversary. In 2025, it celebrated its greatest milestone yet: the 29,000th performance. The current cast is directed by Philip Franks, who has steered the production since May 2024, and the tradition at the end of every performance remains unchanged: the cast asks the audience to keep the secret. After all this time, they still do.

Press Reviews

“The perfect night out. Agatha Christie’s mystery is as gripping now as it was when it first opened — and the audience still can’t stop trying to work it out.”
The Stage
“A masterclass in theatrical suspense. It keeps you guessing right to the last moment. There’s a reason this show has been running for seven decades.”
Evening Standard
“Agatha Christie at her very best — every character is a suspect, every clue a red herring. Brilliant fun and brilliantly plotted.”
Time Out London ★★★★
“Unique theatrical history in an intimate setting. The twist at the end still lands after all these years — it is astonishing that the secret has been kept for over 70 years.”
