HOTEL
St Martins Lane Hotel
Rating
When it opened in 1999, St Martins Lane hailed in a new era of luxury hotels in London. Designed by Philippe Starck, it put style and modernity at the forefront, and to this day offers a popular alternative to traditional notions of luxury. Its address, St Martin’s Lane, is named after St Martin-in-the-Fields church which sits at the southern end of it, on the corner of Trafalger Square, placing it in between top tourist sites and lively Soho.
Interior designer Tim Andreas oversaw a refurbishment of the 204 rooms at the hotel in 2014, keeping its futuristic vibe. Laminated dichroic glass desks, mirrored mini bars, and glass-framed TV sets reflect ambient light around the room, controlled by you with colour changing capabilities, for a dreamy atmosphere. The glass-fronted entrance is discretely placed with little signage, brings you through London’s tallest revolving doors.
Read MoreFor something in between their standard rooms and penthouse, a few ‘deluxe garden’ rooms are available, each with their own private patio for something a little special you’ll be glad you upgraded for. Complete with Malin+Goetz bath products and on-demand TV services, you won’t want to leave your room.
If you do, afternoon tea is on the menu, but expect contemporary delights such as chilli bread with smoked salmon and salsa verde and roasted banana and yuzu tart over old-time classics. Asia de Cuba is their happening restaurant that whips up flavourful fusion cuisine in a feel-good atmosphere. Executive concept chef Louis Pous has put together a Chinese-Cuban mix that’s hugely popular and competitively priced against other hotel restaurants. Make sure you take a trip behind the tea caddy to speakeasy Blind Spot for live music, DJs, and a killer manhattan too.
You won’t find classic wellness facilities either. Instead, Gym Box next door provides a pumping atmosphere for fitness lovers staying at the hotel for something a little more original. Free classes are available to guests at the Olympic-sized boxing ring, laser-lit dance studio, and more.
