HOTEL
Intercontinental Hotel
Rating
At the top of the row of five-star hotels, at no.1 Hamilton Place, Park Lane, the InterContinental Hotel sits on the site of the Queen’s childhood home. Guests can now enjoy the views of Hyde Park, just as a young Elizabeth did, at the luxurious location which opened in 1975. The building, which has 387 rooms and 60 suits, was designed by architect Sir Frederick Gibberd, whose other notable buildings around the country include Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and London Central Mosque. Even with such a prestigious address, it far exceeded expectations when the building was sold in 2013 for $408 million.
One of the highlights of a stay here is the Theo Randall restaurant. Famous for his stint as Head Chef at The River Café, Randall has been serving his Italian cuisine at the restaurant since 2006, reaping excellent reviews, and award wins, most notably for his weekend brunch which locals book well in advance to enjoy. One of the newest hotel restaurant openings in the capital, Ella Canta by Martha Ortiz at the InterContinental brings the flavours of Mexico to the hotel to explore even more world cuisine in one location. Traditional afternoon tea is not overlooked and is served in the Wellington Lounge, named after the 8th Duke of Wellington who opened the hotel. If you’re lucky, your stay will coincide with their monthly ‘gin and jazz’ nights in The Arch Bar for an evening of vintage glamour. Travel Weekly Magazine named the InterContinental as ‘one of the best hotels for foodies’, so make sure you book a table when you book your room.
