My Neighbour Totoro

  • Theatre

    Barbican Centre

  • Duration

    150 minutes

  • Age Restrictions

    6+ years

Based on the celebrated 1988 animated feature film, My Neighbour Totoro is a classic coming-of-age story, with a little bit of magic thrown in for good measure. It tells the tale of Mei – a young girl thrust into difficult circumstances, who soon finds herself transported to an enchanted land filled with spirits and sprites. It’s an inspiring tale of friendship, showing its audience how important our friends can be when searching for comfort in difficult times.

My Neighbour Totoro previously ran at the Barbican in 2022, when it broke box-office records for the most ticket sales ever achieved in the space of one day. It has only grown in popularity since that point, so if you don’t want to miss out, then we advise getting your tickets as soon as possible to avoid disappointment!

After its initial run, it became one of the most awarded theatrical productions of all time, sweeping the Oliviers at this year’s ceremony. This included the highly prestigious Best Entertainment or Comedy Play Award, as well as numerous creative awards.

The play has enjoyed critical acclaim for its extensive use of puppetry, with puppeteer Basil Twist having received a WhatsOnStage award for his outstanding work. Bringing to life a variety of both farm animals and otherworldly creatures, the puppetry is truly a sight to behold. My Neighbour Totoro has also received praise for its dazzling musical score by Joe Hisaishi, who similarly composed the original film. Performed by a live band, there are mesmerising scenes of musical storytelling, further adding to the magic.
