The Story

My Neighbour Totoro — London

Barbican Theatre, Silk Street

Olivier

Award-winning
best new production

Based on Hayao Miyazaki’s beloved 1988 animated film, My Neighbour Totoro arrives in London with the full weight of a global phenomenon behind it — and more than lives up to it. When it first ran at the Barbican in 2022, it broke the theatre’s box-office record for tickets sold in a single day. This triumphant return confirms it as one of the most extraordinary theatrical productions the West End has ever seen.

The story follows Satsuki and her younger sister Mei, who move with their father to a new house in rural Japan while their mother recovers in hospital. Exploring the surrounding countryside, Mei discovers a world of magical creatures hiding in the forest — chief among them the enormous, gentle, cat-like spirit Totoro — who becomes an unlikely guardian and friend during a summer of uncertainty and change.

“A work of wonder — My Neighbour Totoro is the most magical piece of theatre in London.”

What makes the production extraordinary is its puppetry. Basil Twist’s designs bring Totoro and his world to life with breathtaking ingenuity — farm animals, forest spirits and the iconic Catbus are all realised in ways that provoke gasps of delight from audiences of all ages. This is a show about childhood, loss and the comfort of the natural world, told with a delicacy and imagination rarely seen on the West End stage.

It swept the Olivier Awards, winning Best Entertainment or Comedy Play and numerous creative categories. For families, for Miyazaki fans, for anyone who loves theatre at its most inventive and moving — My Neighbour Totoro is not to be missed.
