HOTEL
Ritz Hotel
Rating
The Ritz hotel stands out alone for its grand French architecture, with Renaissance influences, against Piccadilly’s classically British look. The Grade II listed building has been the site of society gatherings and royal occasions since 1906. Opened by famed Swiss hotelier César Ritz, who left his role as manager of The Savoy to focus on his own group of hotels, it was intended to be the most luxurious, lavish, and excessive hotel London had seen.
Just as stunning on the inside as on the outside, it is decorated in Louis XVI style. Architectural historian and author Marcus Binney once described it as “one of the all-time masterpieces of hotel architecture”. Everything has been carefully crafted to show off, not just the hotel, but also the guests within it. The sweeping staircase in the lobby allows women to make an entrance that best displays their gowns, while the Palm Court’s apricot walls were chosen to flatter ladies’ skin tones. Many songs have been written about the magical atmosphere to be found here, including Irving Berlin’s Puttin’ On The Ritz and Noel Coward’s Children Of The Ritz.
Read MoreFamous names, old and new, have flocked to stay there, from Jackie Onassis to Charlie Chaplin, to Roger Moore and Al Paccino. The Palm Court, where it has served its popular afternoon tea since its opening, has become a hub of beautiful people through the ages, Today the hotel still thrives, offering plenty to keep the elite coming back, including the Michelin Star-awarded Ritz Restaurant and The Rivoli Bar that serves Art Deco-era cocktails in a complementary setting, designed to feel as though you’re inside a jewellery box. The Ritz Salon will leave you feeling pampered and ready for a night at The Ritz Club and casino, open to members only, or one of the neighbourhood’s many exclusive bars and restaurants.
All this before relaxing in your uniquely designed room, whether a Superior Queen room or the Royal Suite spread across two floors with stunning views across Green Park.
