HOTEL
Langham Hotel
Rating
The five-star Langham Hotel on Portland Place celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2015. Taking two years to build, it was the largest hotel in the city when it was unveiled by the Prince of Wales in 1865. It had the first hydraulic lift in England, something many guests approached with caution, and in 1879 introduced electric lighting to all rooms, the height of innovation at the time.
The Marylebone landmark, situated at the top of Regents Street, secured its place in the history books when Arthur Conan Doyle, a regular at the hotel, used it as part of the setting for his Sherlock Holmes mysteries A Scandal in Bohemia and The Sign of Four. Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde are among their other literary patrons, and it is where Wilde was commissioned to write The Picture of Dorian Gray for an American publication. Other famous guests have included Princess Diana, Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle.
Read MoreThe luxurious space has inspired the film world too and was partly used as the set for the James Bond film Golden Eye and British director Michael Winterbottom’s 1999 cult classic Wonderland. More recently, Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller filmed Burnt in The Langham restaurant.
For those wanting to explore the real thing, you’ll find fine dining overseen by renowned chefs Michael Roux Jnr. and Albert Roux OBE. The Langham also claims to be the first luxury hotel to offer afternoon tea on their menu, having served the British ritual in the Palm Court since its opening. Their afternoon tea continues to win awards and regularly makes ‘best of’ lists from respected publications to this day for exceptional food in a beautiful setting.
Continuing its pioneering reputation, the Chuan Spa is the first hotel spa to offer an ambience and treatments influenced by Chinese medicine to their guests. The experience is designed to harmonise the five Wu Xing elements for physical and emotional wellbeing.
