HOTEL
Savoy Hotel
Rating
Along the Strand, in the heart of theatreland, The Savoy is one of London’s most famous hotels and has been a pre and post-show tradition since 1889. Founded by Richard D’Oyly Carte, the Producer behind famed theatre duo Gilbert and Sullivan, it was renowned for entertainment, as well as a bed for the night, putting on shows from Frank Sinatra and thespian Noel Coward. The great and the good of showbiz have stayed at the hotel too including Charlie Chaplin, Judy Garland, Laurence Olivier, Marilyn Monroe and Barbara Streisand.
Today the Fairmont group manage the hotel, continually reviving the magic of its past through stunning Edwardian and Art Deco interiors, traditional service, restaurants manned by celebrity chefs, and delicious concoctions served in London’s oldest surviving cocktail bar.
In 2010, The Savoy re-opened after a three-year, £220 million restoration, though it stayed true to its heritage style. The walls of the Beaufort Bar are lined in gold leaf with plush black velvet furnishing, the Thames Foyer received a huge glass dome and ornate gazebo that emphasises the grand piano, and the marble columns of the checkerboard-floored front hall were restored.
Read MoreRooms also revel in Art Deco and Edwardian grandeur, with most having a spectacular view of the Thames which backs on to the hotel. Some of the Savoy’s most famous guests have been commemorated with eight suites encapsulating their spirit from Frank Sinatra to Claude Monet. For the most luxurious stay though, the Royal Suite encompasses the entire riverside of the fifth floor with a four-poster bed, jacuzzi bath, and living area with a private bar.
Home to first-class dining too, patrons can enjoy the culinary genius of Gordon Ramsay in the Savoy Grill, and William Hemming in Simpson’s In The Strand. Kaspar’s Seafood Bar and Grill, is one of the most decadent settings to enjoy fruits de mer in London while the American Bar is a site of pilgrimage for many cocktail lovers for its history, but continues to win awards today.
