Claridge’s is one of the most famous 5-star institutions in the West End, partly thanks to the famous names that have frequented it. Most notably, it’s been a particular favourite with royal families from around the world. During the second world war, a number of royals who had been exiled from their own countries stayed here, including the King of Yugoslavia. During his stay he temporarily had suite 212 declared Yugoslavian territory so that his wife could give birth to Crown Prince Alexander on ‘home soil’, proving just how far the staff here will go to make their guests happy. Over the years a number of royal celebrations have taken place at the hotel too, including Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding reception.
As one of the most prestigious hotels, it comes with certain etiquette expectations. In 1951, Katharine Hepburn infamously broke the dress code by wearing trousers in the lobby and was told she could not use the main entrance. Never one to be told what to do, Hepburn simply opted to use the staff entrance instead.
Today, it’s Hollywood royalty, as well as actual royalty, who can be spotted here. Claridge’s has a reputation for going above and beyond and so it’s well loved by even the pickiest, most demanding divas.
