Anderson & Sheppard
32 Old Burlington Street
Just around the corner from Savile Row, on Old Burlington Street, one of the area’s most distinguished tailors, Anderson & Sheppard, continues its long-standing business. Established in 1905 they are one of the oldest tailors established in the vicinity and remain true to their origins, only creating made-to-measure suits using their house style.
An emphasis on easy movement and following the natural shape of the body has been the unique selling point of the classic tailors, and has made it a particular favourite with some of the world’s coolest gentlemen including Brian Ferry, Liam Neeson, and Cary Grant. They also hold a Royal Warrant for HRH Prince of Wales. The classic sloped, slightly longer shoulders and wide lapels that they adhere to, is a style known as the ‘English drape’. The look was invented by Dutch tailor Frederick Scholte who trained the founders of Anderson & Sheppard.
The premise is suitably smart and traditional with a masculine air. Original fireplaces, mahogany furniture, and leather sofas line the rooms and will make you feel as if you’re stepping back in time as you pass through their doors.
It takes around eight to twelve weeks to create one of their unique suits, including three fittings. Should you need any repairs or alterations to your Anderson & Sheppard garments in the future, the team will be happy to book another appointment for you to keep them in excellent condition.
Their apprenticeship schemes are highly sought after and many of their trainees go on to great success. Most notably it is where Lee McQueen learnt the trade. The company is also a founding members of the Savile Row Bespoke Association, meaning their influence extends well beyond the four burgundy walls of their salon.
Anderson & Sheppard also has a ‘haberdashery store’ around the corner on Clifford Street selling off-the-peg menswear and they also make trips to America twice a year to bring their bespoke service to international clients.
