Norton & Sons
16 Savile Row
Founded by Walter Norton in 1821, Norton & Sons has lived on Savile Row since the 1860s. Initially finding popularity in dressing the gentlemen working in The City, they attracted a new audience at their Mayfair location and began to help them find suits for sports pursuits – proving very good at it – and dressing the likes of King Edward VII and Winston Churchill.
Today, they proudly name royalty from United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Italy, Prussia, Spain, and Portugal as previous customers, alongside three US presidents. They have also incorporated many other famous tailoring businesses including Hammond & Co, J. Hoare & Co, E. Tautz & Sons and Todhouse Reynard & Co.
You’ll be looked after by Head Cutter Nicholas Hammond who began his career with Norton & Sons, and has over seven years’ experience cutting for them, having initially trained in tailoring. Their preferred style is classical, with perfectly balanced proportions, a shaped waist, and structured shoulders free from unnecessary fussiness.
They make regular trips to New York for appointments with their American customers but first-time customers should certainly try and make their inaugural visit at the Savile Row salon. Four visits across three to four months is a typical wait period for first-time clients, though subsequent orders should be a little quicker. A two-piece bespoke suit starts from £4,200 and passes through the hands of up to 11 craftsmen putting in around 60 hours of masterful work on it.
Norton & Sons offer lounge suits, overcoats, blazers, sports jackets, vests, trousers, dinner suits, smoking jackets, dress coats and morning coats made on site in your choice from over 8000 cloths. They also still offer bespoke outdoor pursuit garments such as shooting vests and breeches. A shirt-making service is available, advising on styles, colours, fabrics, and monogramming before they are handmade in England by Turnbull & Asser.
Norton and Sons are members of the Savile Row Bespoke Association, the authority on the area’s tailoring practices.
