Bespoke tailoring gets a fashion-forward makeover at Richard James on Savile Row. Founded in 1992, it was one of the ‘new establishment’ tailors that began to appear around that time, injecting a more modern attitude and tearing up the rule book.
When it opened, they raised many eyebrows, and on their 10th anniversary they decorated their windows in quotes from their neighbours made when they arrived on the street including “They won’t last long” and “VERY dubious”. Successfully sticking it to the institution for over 25 years now, Richard James has bought us the camo tailored suit, the ‘naked’ suit, and even a collaboration with SpongeBob SquarePants.
In addition to their showroom and workshop on Savile Row, which offers a traditional bespoke service, the brand has a ready-to-wear line stocked on their thriving online shop and in stores around the world. It includes a number of surprising products from a tailor such as swimwear and fragrance. A regular at London Fashion Week Men’s, their style combines the same level of expertise as their fellow tradesmen, with a focus on innovation in design, colour and cut. Though the cutting team has their preferred tastes and is on hand to advise you, customers taking advantage of their bespoke service are actively encouraged to add their own personal expression.
Customers should anticipate a bespoke suit taking approximately eight to 12 weeks across two or three fittings. Repeat customers can expect a quicker turnaround and usually just the one fitting. It is recommended that you book an appointment but occasionally there can be space if you drop in. For customers in America or Hong Kong, the team makes visits throughout the year for fittings.
