For traditionally made shoes on Jermyn Street, Barker Shoes is a heritage brand that is still proudly made in Britain. Established in 1880 in Northampton, renowned for its shoemaking industry, they still produce in the same factory and stay true to high quality craft practices including slow natural dyeing and shaping the upper onto the last by hand. Their dedicated craftspeople produce 200,000 pairs of shoes every year.
The history of the brand starts with Arthur Baker, who began making shoes in a workshed at the bottom of his garden. He found success with his advanced waterproof peg-sole boots, eventually supplying to the military, and building a thriving business with a reputable name. The business was passed down through four generations of the family, expanding the factory, and developing new styles, exported to many markets where the ‘English look’ has always been much sought-after. Today they are owned by an international company who has helped them to open their London stores, all at prestigious addresses, two Moscow stores, and a network of stockists.
In addition to the brogues, moccasins, Derbys, and many more styles in classic and creatively updated looks, you’ll also find accessories including belts, socks, and small leather goods. They have everything you could need to look after your new Barker shoes too from polish and cream, to brushes, horns, and trees.
If, over time, your Barker shoes begin to look a little weathered, speak to the staff in store who can book your shoes in for a full restoration. They’ll send your shoes to the Northampton factory where they’ll be stripped and reconstructed on the original last they were made on.
The Jermyn Street branch is an intimate 506 square-feet space with comfortable leather couches and stools to try on their shoes from. To appeal to the local and international clientele who traverse the street in search of exquisite menswear, the selection at this branch focuses on their most high-end and avant-garde styles.
