American outdoor brand The North Face opened its first ever European store in London’s Covent Garden and is still its largest branch in the UK. Based on Southampton Street, surrounded by other adventure retailers, they carry hard-wearing clothing for women, men, and children, as well as tents and hiking backpacks. The brand was founded in 1966 by two hiking enthusiasts in San Francisco and was named after the most rugged and cold side of a mountain. As the pastime of hiking and exploring grew more popular with the ease of flying to far flung places, so did The North Face’s business. Sponsoring several expeditions throughout the 60s and 70s, they enabled thrill-seekers to be properly equipped to experience more of the world. In the 80s, they expanded into skiwear too and in the 90s they unveiled Tekware™, a new high-tech collection for rock climbers, backpackers, hikers, and trail runners with the best functionality yet. They also added shoes to finish the complete kit for their customers.
