“Welcome to the Rock,” sing the residents of Gander, Newfoundland – a tiny town on an island off the north-eastern coast of Canada. It’s home to some 10,000 people and one rundown, oversized airport that once served as a stopover point for transatlantic flights to refuel. That’s why, one autumn morning in 2001, Gander’s population briefly doubled as its residents rushed to the rescue in the middle of a major international incident.

Irene Sankoff and David Hein’s buoyant musical retells the true story of the town that opened its doors – and its hearts – to the thousands of flyers stranded mid-flight on September 11th2001. When American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175 tore into the World Trade Centre that morning, 38 planes and their 7000-odd passengers were grounded in Gander. Under the orchestration of mayor Claude Elliot, local residents were left to organise an impromptu aid effort – setting up shelters, donating supplies and cooking up a catering line.

It’s a heart-soaring story, but in Sankoff and Hein’s hands, a considered one too – a reminder not only of the humanity that counterbalances tragedy, but also of the way the world changed that day. Oblivious passengers stuck on their planes initially pass round the miniatures and party, but as the horror of history dawns on them fully, things change. Tensions erupt as one Eygptian passenger seeks a place for morning prayers, a mark of how speedily suspicion set in, and pilots and passengers alike desperately try to reach their families back home. In the midst of events, two strangers sat next to each other strike up an improbable friendship – maybe something more.

Charged with the Irish-Canadian twang of Gander’s own musical style, there’s a surging, spirited quality to Sankoff and Hein’s score. Their songs are earthy and hearty, designed for a community of voices and the power of the collective shines through in Christopher Ashley’s simplistic staging. A big hit on Broadway, nominated for seven Tony awards, it received an even warmer reception in the West End, with its all-British company winning four Oliviers. It’s a small show, in no sense a grand spectacular, but Come From Away is one of the most heartfelt and wholesome musicals of the century so far.

We went to a matinee show and sat in the Grand Circle with a wonderful view for only £ 25 per seat. The cast had so much energy & put on a great performance, we enjoyed this show immensely.

Had a great seat for a reasonable price in the Grand Circle, The Phoenix is a truly beautiful and comfortable theatre.

I was drawn into the story from the beginning. It's sad of course, given the events on which it is based, but it is also funny and moving in turns. Great performances from every one on stage.

The staff in the theatre from the guys at the door to the girl at the entrance to the Grand Circle were all exceptionally pleasant and helpful.

All in all, a very enjoyable experience and I recommend this show.

‘Make me a channel’ was stunning.
Have to add- the first ‘act’ - staff in the bar who were truly welcoming and genuinely helpful was a great bonus too.

Having seen shows like Les Miserables (which is a timeless, ‘need-no-explanation’ classic), to the Lion King, Phantom of The Opera and Wicked Come From Away sits comfortably among (even surpassing) some of the greats.

The reason is simple the show is so raw and real.

Without giving to much away by means of spoilers, the play takes place in a place called Newfoundland (an island off the far north of Canada). You’re introduced to an array of ‘small town folk’, all with their very own quirks and personalities.

It’s at this point I need to throw my first bouquet. The cast members not only play their individual parts so well, but some cast members end up playing 2 roles - adding such a richness of depth and personality that you find yourself rooting for them and genuinely forget it’s the same person.

The play is simple (by means of concept) yet so, so effective. It’s about 9/11 which seems somber at first, but it’s not really about that - it’s about love, connection, human worth and what happens when stranger band together to help each other.

The scenery is amazing. The acting is amazing. The character stories and relationships among the cast is AMAZING.

This is the best show I’ve ever watched, you are doing yourself an injustice if you don’t add it to your theatre repertoire

I had no idea what the show was about before I saw it, and got a last minute ticket at the box office. Well . What can I say! Please go and see this show! I cannot recommend it enough. We all remember the events of 9/11 but this show shows it from a different perspective. Extremely well portrayed, touching, funny, emotional, and incredible singing, dancing and directed. Who knew you could perform such miracles with 12 chairs and a couple of tables. Take plenty of tissues, and be prepared to be tapping your feet, crying and laughing. read less
