STORY
Hamnet
Theatre
Garrick Theatre
Duration
150 minutes
Almost everyone knows William Shakespeare’s greatest works, but very few actually know the life story of the man himself. Though proud of his plays, Shakespeare’s greatest happiness came from Agnes Hathaway – a natural healer, and his loving wife. The pair have a bond like no other, and their love ultimately solidifies itself with the birth of their son: Hamnet. When the plague rips through England however, young Hamnet is unexpectedly taken from them. The pair must then navigate this sudden grief, with their love for one another put to the test. An inspiring story of how this couple were able to overcome the greatest of suffering, Hamnet is a tale of love, passion, and extraordinary wonder.
The play is based off of the award-winning book of the same name, first released in 2020. The book was a major success, winning praise for its ingenuity and accurate portrayal of grief. The book was in fact so successful that, not only has it spawned a theatrical adaptation, but a film adaptation is also in the works.
