The Improvised Murder Mystery

Murder, She Didn't Write Tickets

A brand-new whodunnit every night. All you have to do is solve it.

About the show

No two nights are ever the same at Murder, She Didn’t Write, an entirely improvised comedy whodunnit settling in for a strictly limited Monday-night residency at the Duchess Theatre. The Edinburgh Fringe troupe Degrees of Error return with the sell-out show that has toured to packed houses.

Working only from ideas shouted out by the audience, the company builds a full murder mystery on the spot, inventing the victim, the suspects, the motive and the killer in front of your eyes. Every performance delivers a different crime with a different set of suspects and a different culprit, so the ending is a genuine surprise to the cast as much as to you. All you have to do is solve it.

The show runs for roughly two hours including an interval and is recommended for ages 12 and above.

Why it’s worth the watch

A comedy where the entire plot is dreamed up live, so you are never watching the same show twice.

  • Made up on the spot. Degrees of Error improvise the whole whodunnit from audience suggestions, with no script to fall back on.
  • A new mystery every night. The victim, suspects, motive and killer all change at every single performance.
  • Fringe pedigree. The company built its following through sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe.
  • You help solve it. The audience shapes the clues and tries to name the murderer before the cast reveals all.
  • Operating Since 2015

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Working only from ideas shouted out by the audience, the company invents the victim, the suspects, the motive and the killer live on stage, so a completely different murder mystery unfolds every night. No two performances are ever the same.

No. Despite the playful title, it is an original improvised comedy whodunnit from the Edinburgh Fringe troupe Degrees of Error, with no link to the television series. You need no knowledge of anything to enjoy it.

Yes, but it is friendly. You help shape the mystery by suggesting ideas that the cast run with, rather than being hauled on stage, so you steer the night from the comfort of your seat.

It plays a strictly limited Monday-night residency at the Duchess Theatre, so unlike most West End shows it is a once-a-week fixture. It is worth checking dates when you book, as performances are less frequent than a typical run.

The Duchess is one of the West End's smallest, most intimate theatres, so you are close to the improvised mayhem wherever you sit. You can compare every price band when you pick your seats above.
