Austentatious

Improvised Comedy

Austentatious Tickets

A brand-new Jane Austen novel, made up on the spot every night.

From £27

About the show

Austentatious is the award-winning improvised comedy that conjures an entirely new Jane Austen novel out of thin air at every performance. The all-star cast take a single made-up title suggested by the audience and spin it into a full period romance on the spot, complete with mistaken identities, swooning heroines and razor-sharp wit, all performed in Regency costume with live musical accompaniment.

Because every show is improvised from scratch, no two performances are ever the same. The company has built a devoted following on the Edinburgh Fringe and on tour, and has been playing regular West End dates at the Vaudeville Theatre since 2022.

The show runs for approximately 1 hour 45 minutes, including one interval, and is recommended for ages 14 and above.

Why it’s worth the watch

Austentatious conjures a brand-new Jane Austen novel out of thin air, so every performance is genuinely one of a kind.

  • A new novel every night. The company takes a made-up title from the audience and improvises a full Regency romance on the spot, meaning no two shows are ever the same.
  • An all-star cast. Familiar comic talents including Rachel Parris, Joseph Morpurgo and Cariad Lloyd bring quick wit and sharp period detail.
  • Proper Austen homage. The Scotsman called it supersmart and terrifically funny, a true homage rather than a simple send-up.
  • A polished production. Full Regency costume and live musical accompaniment give the improvised story the feel of a genuine period piece.
  • Operating Since 2015

Frequently asked questions

Yes. The cast take a single invented Jane Austen title suggested by the audience and improvise an entire period romance from it there and then, so no two performances are ever the same. That thrilling sense of anything-could-happen is the whole point.

Not at all. The comedy works whether or not you have read a word of Austen, though devotees get an extra layer of in-jokes. A love of witty period romance is all you need.

Only gently. The audience suggests the made-up novel titles that the cast then run with, but you are never dragged on stage, so you can enjoy shaping the night from the comfort of your seat.

It is recommended for ages fourteen and up. It is largely good-natured and clean, with the occasional grown-up aside, so it suits teenagers and adults who enjoy quick, clever comedy.

The Vaudeville is a small, intimate theatre where the improvised interplay lands well from anywhere, so you are close to the action wherever you sit. You can compare every price band when you pick your seats above.
