The List
"A truly theatrical feast."
The best-loved witch in children’s books soars into the West End this Christmas as Room on the Broom flies into the Lyric Theatre. Adapted by Tall Stories, the company behind the smash-hit stage version of The Gruffalo, it turns Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much-loved picture book into an hour of songs, puppetry and giggles for the very youngest theatregoers and their grown-ups.
The story is simplicity itself, and all the more magical for it. A cheerful witch and her cat set off across the sky, and along the way they welcome a friendly dog, a beautiful green bird and an eager frog aboard the broomstick. But with so many passengers the broom is soon groaning, and when it snaps in two and a hungry dragon swoops in, the witch’s new friends must band together to rescue her. It is a gentle, funny adventure about kindness, teamwork and always making room for one more.
Brought to life with clever puppets, live music and plenty of chances to join in, Tall Stories’ production is a perfect first taste of live theatre, short enough for little attention spans and charming enough to win over the whole family. Playing daytime performances across the festive season, it is one of the most enchanting ways to spend a winter morning or afternoon in the West End.
Room on the Broom is a joyful, gentle introduction to theatre for young children. Here is why families love it:

A kind witch and her cat set off on her broomstick, and one by one they pick up some friendly animals who would love to join the ride: a dog, a green bird and a frog. But the broom is getting rather crowded, and when it snaps in two and a hungry dragon appears, the animals have to work together to save the day. It is a warm, funny adventure about friendship and finding room for everyone.
Yes. It is Tall Stories' stage adaptation of the much-loved picture book by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, the team behind The Gruffalo. The show brings the rhyming story to life with songs, puppetry, live music and lots of laughs, staying true to the book families adore.
It is perfect for children aged 3 and up, and is a lovely first trip to the theatre. It is short, colourful and interactive, designed to hold little ones' attention, while the wit and warmth keep grown-ups smiling too.
The show runs about one hour with no interval, which is ideal for younger audiences. Performances are during the day rather than the evening, so they fit neatly around little ones' bedtimes over the Christmas holidays.
Room on the Broom plays a festive season at the Lyric Theatre from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with daytime performances. Family shows over Christmas sell quickly, so booking early here on WestEnd.com is the best way to get the dates and seats you want.
