About the show

Chris Pine takes the title role in Ivanov, a new version of Anton Chekhov’s first full-length play, written and directed by Simon Stone, at the Bridge Theatre for a strictly limited season from 27 July to 16 October 2027.

Nikolai Ivanov is a man weighed down by debt, disillusion and a marriage he can no longer feel his way back into. As his world closes in around him, the certainties of his younger self give way to restlessness, regret and a longing for something he cannot name. Simon Stone, known for his bold contemporary reworkings of the classics, brings his distinctive eye to Chekhov’s study of a life running out of road.

The production is designed by Lizzie Clachan, with costume design by Mel Page, lighting by Nick Schlieper and composition and sound by Stefan Gregory.

Frequently asked questions

No. It is a bold new version by Simon Stone, who resets the classics in a sharp, contemporary idiom and tells the story clearly, so newcomers are welcome. Those who know Chekhov will be intrigued by the reinvention.

Yes. The Hollywood star of the Star Trek and Wonder Woman films takes the title role in a rare London stage appearance, in a strictly limited season. It is one of the most anticipated castings of the year.

Nikolai Ivanov is a once-idealistic man crushed by debt, disillusion and a marriage he can no longer reach, whose certainties give way to restlessness and regret as his world closes in. It is Chekhov's searching study of a life running out of road.

It is a serious, melancholy adult drama dealing with despair and a failing marriage, so while there is nothing gratuitous it lands best with older children, teenagers and adults.

The Bridge is a modern theatre with excellent sightlines throughout, and this intimate character drama reads well from the centre of the stalls and the front of the circle. You can compare every price band when you pick your seats above.
