The Story
Dirty Dancing — London
Capital Theatre, Westfield London, Shepherd's Bush
Hit songs performed
live every night
It began with a summer nobody could have predicted. In the mountain resorts of the Catskills, 1963, Frances "Baby" Houseman arrived on holiday with her family — and stumbled into a world of late-night dancing, forbidden romance, and a kind of freedom she had never known. When she caught sight of Johnny Castle, the resort's charismatic dance instructor, her life changed forever.
Eleanor Bergstein's original screenplay has been seen on stages across the globe since the production's debut in 2004 — from Australia to South Africa, Germany to the USA — consistently breaking box office records and winning the hearts of audiences who grew up with the 1987 film and those discovering it for the very first time.
"In an enduring show that offers pure dancing pleasure, with an added strand of thoughtful and hard-hitting radical politics carefully woven in from start to finish."
Now, in a reimagined production at London's brand-new Capital Theatre, the classic story gets the setting it deserves. With a live band, a company of over 40 performers, and sensational new choreography by Chiara Vecchi — including that legendary lift — this is Dirty Dancing as it was always meant to be experienced: intimate, electric, and impossibly alive.
The production features all the moments audiences love: Baby carrying a watermelon into the staff quarters and into a world she can't come back from; the late-night rehearsals in Johnny's cabin; the transformation of an earnest, wide-eyed girl into a woman who knows exactly who she is. And of course the final dance — the one that proves, once and for all, that nobody puts Baby in a corner.
Under the musical supervision of Richard John, the soundtrack of 35 hit songs — Hungry Eyes, Hey! Baby, Do You Love Me?, and the Academy Award-winning (I've Had) The Time of My Life — fills the Capital Theatre with the sound of a summer that never really ended.
