"If this is what improv can do, you wonder why anyone bothers writing anything down."
A brand-new musical, made up on the spot, every single night.
From £29
Showstopper! The Improvised Musical does something no other West End show can promise: a brand-new musical, invented from scratch, every single time. There is no script, no score and no safety net. Instead, the multi-award-winning company takes suggestions from you, the audience, and spins them into a complete original musical on the spot, songs, dance breaks, plot twists and all.
It works like this. At the top of the show the cast asks the room for a setting, a title and a few musical styles, anything from Sondheim to Beyonce, a supermarket to the surface of Mars. Then, backed by a live band reading their every move, the performers conjure an entire two-act musical in real time, complete with hummable numbers, doomed romances and show-stopping finales. Every performance is a genuine world premiere, and every one is different, because the whole thing is built live and never written down.
Born in London in 2008 and honed over more than a decade of sell-out Edinburgh Fringe runs, two West End seasons and its own BBC Radio 4 series, Showstopper! became the first improvised show ever to win an Olivier Award, taking the prize for Best Entertainment and Family. The real wonder of it is how good the results are: audiences arrive expecting a laugh and leave amazed that something dreamed up on the spot can be this slick, this tuneful and, often, this surprisingly moving.
Showstopper! is one of the most joyful, one-of-a-kind nights out in the West End. Here is why it is worth catching:

At the start of the show the cast asks you, the audience, for suggestions: a setting, a title, and the musical styles you would like to hear. From those ingredients the company and a live band invent a complete new musical on the spot, with songs, dance numbers, characters and a plot, all made up in the moment. Nothing is scripted and nothing is planned, so every performance is genuinely a world premiere.
Completely. No two performances have ever been the same, because the whole show is built live from that night's audience suggestions. See it twice and you will get two entirely different musicals, which is why fans come back again and again to see what the company will conjure next.
No. Your only job is to shout out a few suggestions near the start if you fancy it, and even that is optional. You will never be dragged on stage. You simply sit back and watch a brand-new musical take shape in front of you, knowing you helped spark it.
It is the real thing. Showstopper! is the first improvised show to win an Olivier Award, in the Best Entertainment and Family category, and grew from years of sell-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe and its own BBC Radio 4 series. Critics regularly marvel that something invented on the spot can be this polished, funny and moving.
Showstopper! plays a series of special one-off dates at the Cambridge Theatre rather than a nightly run, currently Monday 27 July, Monday 12 October, Monday 23 November and Monday 21 December 2026, each at 7.30pm. Because performances are occasional, they tend to sell out, so booking ahead here on WestEnd.com is wise.
It is a fun night out for most ages and makes a great family or group outing, though because it is improvised the exact content varies from show to show. Children under four are not admitted, and anyone aged 16 or under must be accompanied by an adult.
