The film that changed everything

Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Or choose something else entirely. Thirty years on from the film that defined a generation, Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting storms the West End stage for the first time as a fully realised musical — and it is anything but nostalgic.

“This musical has a bigger, loudly beating human heart than either the book or the film.”
Irvine Welsh

Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy and Kelly are back — alongside an ensemble cast and a live band — in a world premiere production written by Welsh himself, directed and developed by Caroline Jay Ranger, and featuring music and lyrics by Stephen McGuinness (Steve Mac) and Irvine Welsh. The score blends electrifying tracks from the iconic 1996 film alongside confrontational, celebratory original songs written for the stage.

This is not a jukebox musical. Welsh has been clear: the only way Trainspotting works as a musical is if the songs move the story forward as proper theatre. What’s arrived is something genre-defying — raw, invigorating and life-affirming, speaking to the contemporary malaise of defiance in the face of an uncertain future. As Welsh puts it: people need to sing their hearts out and laugh their heads off. They’ll be well served here.

The 1996 film took over £76 million worldwide, won a BAFTA for Best Screenplay, and was ranked 10th in the BFI’s Top 100 Greatest British Films. The novel has sold over a million copies in the UK alone. Now, Welsh has expanded the story — introducing the parents of the protagonists and new characters — to create something fresh rather than a replica. Robbie Scott, 26, makes his West End debut in the lead role of Renton.
