The Truth — London

4
West End stars — all at the top of their game
90
Minutes of blistering, non-stop comedy
Oscar
The playwright has one — and an Olivier nomination for this play

“If everyone told the truth, there wouldn’t be a couple left on earth.” Michel is a middle-aged man with a comfortable life, a loyal wife, and a secret he is determined to keep. He has been having an affair with Alice — the wife of his best friend Paul — for seven months. He’s managed it rather well, he thinks. Then Paul starts to ask questions. And Laurence starts to notice things. And suddenly everyone seems to know exactly which play they’re in — except Michel.

“A pitch-perfect hit. Florian Zeller is a past master of pulling the rug.”
The Observer ★★★★★

Florian Zeller — the Oscar-winning French playwright whose The Father (starring Anthony Hopkins in the film adaptation) became one of the defining pieces of contemporary theatre — is at his most gleefully entertaining here. The Truth is his marital comedy: a sharp, merciless 90-minute comedy of manners in which nobody is quite who they say they are and every scene quietly repositions everything you thought you understood about the one before.

Translated by Christopher Hampton — who has translated every Zeller West End production, and who wrote Les Liaisons Dangereuses — the play is directed by Lindsay Posner, returning to the production she staged at the Menier Chocolate Factory before its West End transfer to Wyndham’s in 2016. The new staging features set and costume design by Lizzie Clachan (Cherry Orchard, Teeth ’n’ Smiles).

The cast is the most delicious part. Tony Award-nominated Stephen Mangan plays Michel — his most recent West End credits include Mike Bartlett’s Unicorn and Private Lives at the Donmar. Double Olivier Award-winner Janie Dee (Follies, Hay Fever) plays Laurence. Comedy icon Ardal O’Hanlon — Father Ted himself — is Paul. And Sarah Hadland (Miranda, Strictly Come Dancing) is Alice. It is, as the producer puts it, “a cast to die for.”

Press Reviews

“A pitch-perfect hit. Florian Zeller is a past master of pulling the rug — you realise you’ve been in the hands of a writer in complete control of his craft.”
The Observer ★★★★★
“A funny and devious must-see. Quick pace and bracing comic wordplay fail to hide some piercing, lasting truths.”
The Guardian ★★★★
“A razor-sharp marital comedy. It makes a mockery of truth, making it appear more and more absurd with each new revelation.”
The Times ★★★★
“A zippy, witty farce about ever-shifting layers of infidelity. Lindsay Posner’s production is ruthlessly swift and snappy — the laughs are as sharp as the lies.”
Time Out ★★★★
