Max Bialystock, a downtrodden Broadway producer, is close to running out of options — his latest show has tanked. When Leo Bloom, a gentle accountant, takes a look at the books, Leo comes up with an outrageous idea: they raise a huge amount of money, put on the worst show ever deliberately, then close it after one performance — making off with the extra money the investors have given them. Max and Leo, feeling like they have no other choice, hire the seemingly worst people for the job: a crazy ex-Nazi playwright, a campily incompetent director, and a ridiculously miscast actor for the lead. Their show — absurdly titled Springtime for Hitler — is destined to fail. However, thanks to a lovely twist of fate, people can’t get enough of the ridiculousness and they think it’s a brilliant satire — thus, the musical becomes a huge success. The plan fails in a very dramatic way, leaving Max and Leo angry investors to deal with and lots of laughs happening.
