Shadowlands — London

Evening Standard
Award Best Play

Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey, Paddington) returns to the West End in one of the most celebrated plays of its generation. Shadowlands is the true story of C.S. Lewis — the Oxford don and celebrated author of The Chronicles of Narnia — whose carefully ordered academic life is upended by the arrival of Joy Davidman, a spirited American poet who challenges everything he thinks he knows about faith, love and happiness.

What begins as a meeting of minds becomes something far more profound: an uplifting and deeply moving journey of love and the fragile beauty of life. Maggie Siff (Mad Men, Billions, Sons of Anarchy) stars alongside Bonneville as Joy, bringing warmth, wit and fierce intelligence to a role that is the equal of his in every way.

“Entertaining, funny, deeply touching — Hugh Bonneville is devastating as C.S. Lewis in his return to the West End.”

Written by William Nicholson (Gladiator) and adapted from his own BAFTA Award-winning television film, Shadowlands first won the Evening Standard Award for Best Play before transferring to Broadway with a Tony Award nomination. In 1993 it became an Oscar-nominated film directed by Richard Attenborough, starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger. This acclaimed revival, directed by Rachel Kavanaugh and originally staged at Chichester Festival Theatre in 2019, now arrives in London for a strictly limited engagement.

C.S. Lewis wrote in A Grief Observed: “The pain I feel now is the happiness I had before. That’s the deal.” It is that deal — the extraordinary bargain of love — that Shadowlands explores with rare intelligence and compassion. A play about faith tested by joy, and joy tested by grief. Book your tickets today for one of the West End’s most unmissable productions.
