He arrived at Paddington Station with nothing but a battered suitcase, a jar of marmalade, and a label around his neck that read: "Please look after this bear. Thank you." Michael Bond's small bear from Peru has been one of Britain's most loved characters since 1958 — and now, for the first time ever, Paddington's story comes to life on the West End stage.

The world premiere of Paddington The Musical brings together an extraordinary creative team: music and lyrics by McFly's Tom Fletcher, a book by Olivier Award-winner Jessica Swale, and direction by Luke Sheppard, the force behind & Juliet and Starlight Express. The result is a show as warm, funny, and quietly moving as the books themselves — and a theatrical event that has already become one of the most talked-about openings of the decade.

"This is Paddington as you've never seen him before, brought to life by a team celebrating all of the magic and wonder of live theatre."

After a long journey from darkest Peru, Paddington arrives in London alone, in search of the explorer who once promised him a home. A chance encounter with the Brown family leads to a new life in Windsor Gardens — and a series of comic mishaps that only Paddington could cause. But not everyone in London is pleased to see him. Millicent Clyde, curator of the Natural History Museum's taxidermy collection, has long been searching for one final specimen: a Peruvian bear.

At its heart, this is a story about belonging — about what it means to be welcomed somewhere new, and what a family will risk for the people it loves. It is funny and warm and daft in all the right ways, and it contains the kind of theatrical moments — not least Paddington himself, brought to life through extraordinary puppetry — that audiences will talk about long after the final curtain.

Sonia Friedman Productions, StudioCanal and Eliza Lumley Productions have created a show that honours everything Michael Bond put into his books: the optimism, the good manners, the gentle chaos, and above all, the conviction that kindness always wins in the end.
