Only Fools and Horses – West End

    Theatre Royal Haymarket

    150 minutes

Britain’s best-loved sitcom isn’t an obvious contender for a stage musical. Sure, there was that wheezing, raggedy stadium sing-a-long of a theme tune (na-na-na-na-na, na-na-na-na-na), but the knockabout lives of the Trotter family, pedalling their wares around Peckham, doesn’t immediately scream out for an 11 o’clock number.

No bother. Adapted by comedian Paul Whitehouse, of Fast Show fame, and Jim Sullivan, son of the television’s show’s legendary originator John Sullivan, Only Fools and Horses: the Musical has proved a crowd-pleaser in the heart of the West End.

It might be little more than a chance to re-acquaint oneself with three of the most classic characters in sitcom history and a string of fan favourites lovingly reprised, by as Del Boy and Rodney always suspected, the only thing that matters is that it shifts sales. This time next year, they might all be millionaires. Within a month of opening, the show announced an extension. Cushty.

It’s still set in 1980s Peckham and the Trotter brothers are still on the make. Del Boy’s got another hare-brained money-making scheme and he’s dragging Rodney along for the ride and, with Whitehouse himself recreating the role of Grandad (originally played to gruff, discombobulated perfection by Lennard Pearce), the musical wrings the best out of the bunch. Around them, the whole larger-than-life gang translate well to the stage: the doltish Trigger, the dodgy Mickey Pearce and the snobbishly, gauche Boycie and Marlene.

Tucked into this proper knees-up of a knock-off, there are hints of old music hall traditions – vaudevillians sending gags out with a ba-doom-tish, a lick of slapstick, not to mention a rousing round of the old cockney standard ‘Any Old Irons.’ Musically, however, it’s John Sullivan’s own sitcom standard – once voted the greatest-ever theme tune on television – that steals the show. Not once, but twice over. Luvvly jubbly, book your Only Fools and Horses Tickets today!

It's well put together, fits a complete story that's true enough to the show into a neat two-hour package and was very enjoyable.

Let's say though as a musical (i.e. the music part) - it's an absolute waste of time. Thankfully about half of it is talking but apart from the theme and a few songs that appear in the show the songs that were written for it are dire.

But like I say, there's enough bits where there's no singing to make it a very worthwhile trip, but I feel it could have been much better - an open goal and they scored just.

One of the best musical I've seen.

Was really looking forward to it as we are avid fans. We were not disappointed!! It was fantastic, Del Boy was played by Mark Pearce who did not disappoint he mimicked “Del Boy’s” shoulder shuffle brilliantly. The acting was great the singing was amazing.
We will definitely be returning and bringing our children with us who also love only fools. A great show for all the family to enjoy.
The theatre it’s self was beautiful and our seats in the Royal circle were great we didn’t miss a thing.

We have always been big fans of OFAH and this adaptation to a stage musical did not disappoint. A shout out to the ‘market’ lady with the beautiful voice who sang Holding back the years. All the cast had good singing voices and many of the iconic moments from the tv series over the years were included. A great ‘feel good’ evening performed in a beautiful theatre. read less

Close your eyes and youl think Rodney's on stage loved him as much as the TV Rodney.. Les Dennis you are an inspiration to everyone, the energy this guy has throughout, I dont have that much energy at 31, to look at this guy at the end and think he looks knackered now but not once looked it throughout the performance, really makes you appreciate the energy it takes up and shows how talented this guy is, he should take amanda Holdens seat on Britain's got talent. Not many people could be grandad! Rodney well that guy must be an impressionist along with rachelle, all of u done amazing. If your worried this will be disappointing well dont be!. Dont go if u dont appreciate musicals because ul just complain as its not going to be a TV show it's a musical! so yes it will be different purely coz it's on stage and A musical but wow they did this proud. I hope the TV trotters have seen this and acknowledged every single one of these performers. I'd go again but only with all these performers just like u cant replace the REAL delboy, Rodney, grandad, trigger, boyce and everyone else, you cant replace THE REAL stage trotters and boyce, rachelle, trigger, Cassandra etc etc. You were all brilliant. Even the grand circle are brilliant seats as the theatre is small, but beautiful. read less

The rest of the cast - a joy. Seamless interaction that took me back to the original with incredible accuracy. The writing - poignant witty and clever. There were a few additional cast members that weren’t in the original- and I felt they were excellently conceived and hilarious- particularly the flamboyant one who provided a very clever comedy act. My mum and I laughed and cried. A gem and magic. Very very many thanks to the producers and actors.

Not sure if the word "musical" is really a portrait of this show yes few musical numbers during the show. But it's more about the show title
Was slightly disappointed that grandad, suddenly vanished and uncle Albert appeared.
Some of the references from the show, are used but not how seen in the tv show
Bug overall worth the price of a ticket. Altho we had seats in the stalls
Biggest bonus ice creams at interval could be brought for cash, same as the programme

Spoiler alert. DO NOT LEAVE TIL THE VERY VERY END OF SHOW.
classic scene is replayed
