The Story
Oh, Mary! — London
What was Mary Todd Lincoln really like in the weeks before her husband was shot? According to Cole Escola — playwright, Tony Award-winner, and the original Mary — she was miserable, suffocated, probably drunk, and absolutely desperate to be a cabaret star. Oh, Mary! is a darkly hilarious, unapologetically camp reimagining of one of history's most overlooked women, and it has taken the West End by storm.
The New York Times
Set in a wildly heightened version of 1865 Washington, the play follows Mary as she spirals through unrequited yearning, alcoholism, suppressed desires and theatrical ambition — all while her husband Abraham prepares to attend the theatre. The show flips the script on presidential history with razor-sharp wit and glorious absurdity, transforming familiar figures into larger-than-life comic creations.
Born off-Broadway in 2024, Oh, Mary! transferred to Broadway's Lyceum Theatre where it broke box-office records — the first show in the theatre's 121-year history to gross over $1 million in a single week. It won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Play (Cole Escola) and Best Direction of a Play (Sam Pinkleton), was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and received a special citation from the New York Drama Critics' Circle. Now it has crossed the Atlantic for its first international transfer, arriving at the Trafalgar Theatre with Mason Alexander Park and, from 27 April, Catherine Tate stepping into Mary's enormous crinoline.
