THE
STORY

Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons

  • Theatre

    Harold Pinter Theatre

  • Duration

    2 hours

  • Age Restrictions

    14+ years

Sam Steiner’s 2015 play Lemons Lemons Lemon Lemons Lemon, starring Jenna Coleman and Aidan Turner, captures the conversations of a couple in an alternate dystopian world. This is underlined by The Quietude Act, which allows only 140 words dictated per day to its inhabitants – resulting in fault lines between Bernadette and Oliver as they grapple with social restrictions that limit their means of expression. Director Josie Rourke successfully utilizes lighting cues while Robert Jones’ looming curved backdrop adds tension, coupled with Annie Lunnette Deakin-Foster’s movement direction, further emphasizing physicality through artful composition when speech can no longer be used effectively. Ultimately this captivating story dives into themes including censorship of free speech alongside relevant topics such as Brexit referendum results, making it all the more enthralling!
