The Story

Kinky Boots — London

Tony Awards won

Charlie Price never expected to inherit a shoe factory. After the sudden death of his father, he finds himself in charge of Price & Son — a fourth-generation Northampton business that is haemorrhaging money and shedding jobs. With no idea how to save it, and his relationship falling apart, Charlie stumbles into the most unlikely of partnerships: Lola, a larger-than-life drag queen whose need for specialised footwear might just hold the answer.

Based on the true story of W.J. Brooks Ltd and inspired by the 2005 film, Kinky Boots is one of the most joyful, life-affirming musicals of the 21st century. With a Tony and Grammy Award-winning score by pop icon Cyndi Lauper and a book by Harvey Fierstein, it arrives at the London Coliseum in a brand-new production starring Strictly Come Dancing's Johannes Radebe as Lola and multi-platinum recording artist Matt Cardle as Charlie.

"Kinky Boots is returning home to London! When audiences leave the show, they feel happy and uplifted — and that's something the world could really use right now."

Lola and Charlie could hardly be more different. Charlie is cautious, rooted in tradition, weighed down by expectation. Lola is fearless, flamboyant, and — beneath the sequins — carrying wounds of their own. What brings them together is a shared belief that people deserve to be exactly who they are. That belief, Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper argue, is the most radical thing of all.

The show first opened on Broadway in 2013, where it ran for over 2,500 performances and walked away with six Tony Awards including Best Musical. It then played the West End's Adelphi Theatre from 2015 to 2019. This brand-new production — directed by Curve's Artistic Director Nikolai Foster — opened to sell-out audiences on a UK and European tour before transferring to the London Coliseum for a strictly limited West End season.

Johannes Radebe, one of Strictly Come Dancing's most beloved professional dancers, makes his West End debut in the role he was born to play. He is joined by Matt Cardle, who brings warmth and vulnerability to Charlie, in a show that has never felt more necessary or more exhilarating.
