When Chekhov wrote it — still uncomfortably relevant

Nikolai has forgotten how to be happy. Or was he ever? He’s married to the perfect woman, he’s had a successful career — he should be heading into midlife feeling confident and settled. Sure, there’s some debt piling up, and his wife Anna has been laid low with unexplained illnesses. But they’ve jumped bigger hurdles before. What exactly is gnawing at him? Why does the world feel like it’s falling apart? Maybe he just needs to shake it off. There’s a party at the Lebedevs’ tonight.

“Chekhov is the master of finding the humour in our suffering and the crisis lurking underneath our joy — a mercurial magician who elevates the seemingly banal to the sublime, then pops the balloon just as it’s getting too poetic.”
Simon Stone, Director

As Nikolai tumbles from misstep to faux-pas, he tries to resuscitate his lust for life. Anna sacrificed everything to marry him — her conservative parents disowned her because of his political leanings. He knows he owes her happiness. He just can’t seem to remember where he left it. Not that going out partying every night is helping her opinion of him very much. But the alternative is staying at home and letting her see how miserable he is. Something needs to change. Except when change comes, it’s in the absurd, undignified form life often presents it: an affair.

Simon Stone — Olivier Award-winner for Yerma, BAFTA-nominated for The Dig, and the director behind the “fantastically original, gripping and magnificent” (The Guardian) The Lady from the Sea at this same venue — brings Chekhov’s keenly observed comic drama hurtling into the contemporary world. Stone reunites the same creative team from The Lady from the Sea: set designer Lizzie Clachan, costume designer Mel Page, composer and sound designer Stefan Gregory, and lighting designer Nick Schlieper.

In the lead role of Nikolai is Chris Pine — Captain Kirk in the Star Trek franchise, Steve Trevor in Wonder Woman, acclaimed in Hell or High Water — making his long-awaited London stage debut. Pine said of the project: “I’m delighted to be collaborating with Simon. It’s been over ten years since I was on stage and to be able to return to it in London at the beautiful Bridge Theatre is a thrill. I can’t wait to start.”
