Groundhog Day – West End
Theatre
The Old Vic
Duration
150 minutes
Age Restrictions
12+ years
Meet Phill Connors – a narcissistic, self-centred weatherman sent to cover the celebration of Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Viewing himself as far too important to be mingling with townsfolk, he is eager to escape. Fate has other plans however… not only does he find himself trapped in Punxsutawney, but he’s also trapped in Groundhog Day, repeating the day again… and again… and again. Realising he is doomed to spend the rest of eternity in this same place, Phil must battle to escape Groundhog Day once and for all!
This marvellous musical first played at the Old Vic in 2016, where it opened to widespread critical acclaim. It then went onto win the Olivier Award for Best New Musical, as well as Best Actor in a Leading Role for Andy Karl’s outstanding portrayal of Phil Connors. It subsequently transferred to Broadway, where Karl continued to win numerous awards.
Read MoreSeven years later, Groundhog Day is making its triumphant return to the Old Vic, with Karl reprising his award-winning role. London audiences now have the opportunity to see this breathtaking show once more!
Groundhog Day reunites most of the creative team behind Matilda the Musical, including music and lyrics by Australian comedian Tim Minchin. The score is quite possibly one of the greatest in West End history, with euphoric tunes and witty lyrics galore. Minchin is joined by award-winning director Matthew Warchus, whose creativity is spellbinding. Warchus has shown time and time again that his imagination knows no bounds, and this production is a testament to that fact.
Whether you were a fan of the original film, you’re a fan of Tim Minchin, or you’re a fan of musical theatre in general, you will want to see this show not only once but, much like Phil Connors, many times afterwards too!
