Dr. Semmelweis takes place in 19th century Europe – a time where the medical profession is steadily growing in both size and regulation. Though a scientific revolution has taken place, one problem still remains…. thousands of women are dying in childbirth each and every year, and no one knows how to stop it. That is until Hungarian doctor Ignaz Semmelweis enters the scene, with a clear solution in sight. While the answer may seem so simple, Semmelweis is confronted with an establishment that questions the legitimacy of his approach; in fact, his opponents are so resistant that they even go as far to question his sanity. Facing an uphill climb, Semmelweis must give his all in a desperate attempt to save others. But will it prove worthwhile, or will it all be for nothing? That remains to be seen…
This production features Academy Award-winning actor Mark Rylance in his grand return to the stage. Rylance is a star of both stage and screen, having received numerous accolades over his long career. He is perhaps best known for his portrayal of Soviet intelligence officer Rudolf Abel in Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies, as well as his leading role in The BFG. This particular project is very personal to Rylance, as he envisioned the idea for the play himself alongside playwright Stephen Brown. Critics have praised Rylance’s performance as extraordinary, with some publications even saying that this is his greatest achievement to date.
Dr. Semmelweis is a remarkable piece of theatre, with an intriguing plot and an outstanding lead performance. Don’t miss out on your opportunity to see Mark Rylance making theatre history!
