Adrian Lester. Hilariously funny and ultimately heartbreaking.
The Story
Cyrano de Bergerac — London
Poet. Soldier. Philosopher. Cyrano de Bergerac burns with brilliance — and burns with longing. Fiercely funny and devastatingly romantic, Cyrano lives by his words and his sword. Secretly in love with his cousin Roxane, he watches from the shadows as she falls for another man. Christian is handsome but hopeless with words. There is only one person who can help him. And helping Christian may be the only way Cyrano can love Roxane at all.
Financial Times ★★★★★
Following a sold-out, critically acclaimed run at the RSC’s Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, this exhilarating production transfers to the West End for a strictly limited season. Edmond Rostand’s immortal 1897 comedy — the play that introduced the word ‘panache’ to the English language — has been given a bold new life by director Simon Evans (BBC’s Staged) and co-adaptor Debris Stevenson (Poet in Da Corner, Royal Court), who bring contemporary poetic language to a story that remains as sharp and heartbreaking as it ever was.
Olivier Award-winner Adrian Lester — celebrated for his Othello and Henry V at the National Theatre, The Lehman Trilogy on Broadway, and Hustle on screen — makes his RSC debut as Cyrano, and the performance is described by critics as “absolutely magnetic”, “thunderously charismatic” and “hilariously funny and desperately moving in equal parts”. Susannah Fielding (Wolf Hall, Ian Charleson Award-winner) plays Roxane with “girlish excitement, daring and genuine emotion”, and Levi Brown (This Town, BBC) is Christian. They are joined by Scott Handy as the scheming Comte de Guiche and Christian Patterson as the irresistible Ragueneau.
The production is presented by Wessex Grove and Gavin Kalin Productions in association with the RSC, and plays at the Delfont Mackintosh Noël Coward Theatre — the same elegant St Martin’s Lane venue that hosted The Inheritance, All About Eve, Slave Play and Patriots.
