Selfridges on Oxford Street had been fulfilling a dream of making shopping an exciting and theatrical experience since 1909. The UK’s second largest store was integral in transforming the West End into one of the hottest retail spots in the world and it remains a pioneering department store to this day.
Founded by American Harry Gordon Selfridge, he arrived from Chicago with drive, ambition, and enthusiasm to build a store that was as much about service as it was about shopping, a store that to this day houses restaurants and bars, beauty services, personal shopping and events. This has been endorsed outside the company as well, as the only brand to be awarded Best Department Store in the World three times.
The six-floor shopping mecca is filled with fashion for men, women, and children, an expansive beauty hall and food hall, and homewares, technology, and a newsagent. Fashion magpies should head straight to the Wonder Room on the ground floor, where some of the most luxurious watch and jewellery brands have their own boutiques, including Tiffany & Co, Chopard, De Beers, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Cartier.
Services include a cobbler, pharmacy, opticians, gift registry, tax refund lounge, bra fitting, and a hair and beauty salon. Their Click & Collect service is one of the best around too, with items ordered before 10pm available to pick up the very next day.
Harry Gordon Selfridge’s motto was ‘Everyone is welcome!’ So, whether you’re grabbing a quick cuppa in Starbucks, or celebrating a special occasion alfresco style at the Roof Deck Restaurant & Bar, splashing out on an entire new wardrobe, or picking up a little London trinket for loved ones back home, you’ll always be greeted with a smile.
