Welsh & Jefferies
20 Savile Row
Starting life in 1917 as a military tailor on Eton High Street in Windsor, Berkshire, Welsh & Jefferies proved itself worthy enough over time to move onto Savile Row where it is located today. The original premise’s proximity to the prestigious Eton College private school and Windsor Castle established them among elite names, eventually receiving a Royal Warrant from HRH Prince of Wales. In 1999 however, the company acquired Lesley and Roberts, taking over their client base to introduce them to a fresh audience of diplomats and aristocrats. As such, they have expanded from their roots to provide suits and overcoats for the many who visit the famous Savile Row each year, including a dedicated women’s service.
Head Cutter James Cottrell looks after the bespoke service for gentleman, booking in two fittings for customers on their first visit, and one fitting for any repeat orders, with a turnaround time of four to six weeks. Cottrell began training on Savile Row at the age of 16 and worked at Kilgour, Nutter’s and Henry Poole before bringing his many years of experience to Welsh & Jefferies.
Women are looked after by Yingmei Quan, Head Cutter for female clients. The process varies marginally from menswear, but the same level of skill and detail are guaranteed. Quan won the prestigious ‘Golden Shears’ prize in 2011 for her work, setting her apart from others on The Row. For international customers, Cottrell and Quan make visits throughout the year to America, Switzerland, and several cities across China for appointments.
The shop on Savile Row is an intimate environment with a classical feel that neatly displays the best of the tailors’ work. A long, floor-to-ceiling mirror lines one wall, making it feel more airy and spacious, with mounted antlers and bookshelves providing the only decoration. If you’re lucky, you’ll see the cutting team working their magic on a suit on the shop floor as you peer through the glass-fronted store.
