HOTEL
Connaught Hotel
Rating
A hotel has existed on the site of The Connaught in Carlos Place since 1815. Originally named The Coburg, it was renamed after Queen Victoria’s son, the Duke of Connaught, in 1917.
More than just a place to stay, The Connaught has a strong history of gold-standard dining, a reputation that it keeps today. It opened The Grill Room in 1955 and it soon became one of the trendiest restaurants of its time. The following decade, Gourmet magazine praised the hotel for serving “the best cooking in England”. Michel Bourdin joined the restaurant team in 1975 where he stayed for 26 years, winning numerous awards and training many now-famous chefs. Bourdin was succeeded by Angela Hartnett who won a Michelin Star while at the hotel, and then Hélène Darroze, who won her second Michelin star for her restaurant which guests can still dine in today. In 2016, The Connaught Bar, run by mixologist Agostino Perrone, became the only institution to win the World’s Best Cocktail Bar accolade for the second time at the Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards.
Read MoreA £70 million refurbishment of the hotel took place in 2007, overseen by Guy Oliver, giving it the refined Britishness that you’ll see today. A number of interesting works by British artists can be found at The Connaught including pieces by Barbara Hepworth and two of Damien Hirst’s famous butterfly pieces. Remaining sensitive to over 200 years of history, some classical features have stayed such as the wooden staircase in the lobby. Ralph Lauren is rumoured to have been so enamoured with the staircase when he stayed at the hotel during the 70s that he commissioned a replica to be made in his Madison Avenue flagship in New York.
The ballroom at The Connaught was the first to be built in Mayfair for over 80 years when it opened in 2009. It is used for VIP events including catwalk shows, gala dinners, and some of the most lavish weddings in London.
