Burlington Arcade’s historical significance and proximity to the most refined neighbourhood in London makes it the perfect location for Church’s. Established in 1873 in Northampton, the UK’s heart of shoe manufacturing, Church’s was unique for its time in offering half sizes, and were the first ever cordwainers to make right and left shoes in their factory. Their excellence in craftsmanship, which the founders date back even further to 1675 when the artisan tradition began in the Church family, remains to this day across their men’s and women’s shoes, leather bags, purses, wallets, and belts, now under the ownership of Prada.
Over their history they have received much acclaim including becoming a founding member of the British Shoe and Allied Trades Research Association (SATRA), leading the way in product testing to its high standards, and in 1965 they received the Queen’s Award to Industry for excellence in exports. It is what has made them a treasured British company that has survived centuries.
Today, every pair of Church’s shoes is still made in their Northampton factory, undergoing more than 250 manual steps per pair and taking up to eight weeks to complete. They are dedicated to using what is known as the ‘Goodyear’ method of shoemaking which allows for full refurbishment of the shoe, meaning they are guaranteed to last you a lifetime with proper care.
For a little helping hand in looking after them, a number of shoe care products including shoe trees, polish, and brushes are also available. Their shoe horns and travel kits also make excellent gifts for any refined gentlemen in your life. Every shoe from their classic range comes with its own branded shoe bag too to keep them in mint condition.
